Abstract

The present paper analyzes how the experiment conducted by the US Government's National Renewable Energy Research Laboratory (NREL) on algal oil as biodiesel influenced the development of the biodiesel technology. The research, known as the Aquatic Species Program (ASP), was funded by US Department of Energy with an objective of determining the technological, environmental and economical feasibility of using high-oil algae for biodiesel. The discussion is limited on the United States transportation sector during the year of 1978 to the present. Using a Strategic Niche Management (SNM) approach, we examine actors' expectations, their social networks, and methods of learning processes on algae technology.
