Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of sustainable tourism principles in the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and to identify the challenges faced in the process. A qualitative research method was employed, using data collection techniques such as semi-structured interviews in the form of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), observation, and documentation. The key informants were members of the management team, including the Head of Communication, Media Communication Manager, and Senior Communication Manager. The findings indicate that the implementation of sustainable tourism principles has been carried out fairly well, particularly in the social aspect through the involvement of local communities in cultural preservation, consultation forums, and community engagement programs. Economically, efforts include partnerships with MSMEs, capacity-building trainings, and the recruitment of local workers. Environmental initiatives are reflected in mangrove conservation, the use of renewable energy, and eco-friendly architectural design. However, some challenges remain in terms of environmental transparency, public awareness, and equitable economic access. External constraints include regulatory inconsistencies between government institutions and the social dynamics of local communities, which require adaptive communication approaches and selective investment partnerships aligned with sustainability values. In conclusion, the Kura Kura Bali SEZ is on the right track toward sustainable tourism development, though continuous improvement is needed in education, economic inclusivity, and intersectoral policy harmonization.
