Abstract

Banana stems are agricultural by-products with potential as animal feed due to their high fiber and water content. However, their direct utilization remains limited due to their large size and the difficulty of manual processing. Therefore, an innovative technology in the form of an efficient and easy-to-operate banana stem chopper is required. This study aims to design and develop a banana stem cutting machine with a production capacity of 50 kg/hour, capable of producing uniformly sized pieces to facilitate fermentation or mixing with other feed ingredients. The machine was successfully designed and built according to the specified technical requirements and is capable of producing consistent banana stem cuts. It is powered by a 1 HP electric motor and uses a transmission system consisting of 6” and 3” pulleys connected by an A1-type V-belt, which significantly accelerates the chopping process compared to manual methods. Test results indicate that the machine is effective in supporting the production of alternative animal feed based on agricultural waste, particularly banana stems. Its ergonomic design and use of commonly available components make it suitable for use by small to medium-scale livestock farmers to improve feed production efficiency and productivity.
